Rules & Warnings

Rules:

  • The 2013 Boone-Roubaix will consist of two sequential events: a mass-start race followed immediately by a recreational Gran Fondo. Both events use the same course, and both events will be timed. The race will have dedicated wheel trucks and prizes for age group winners.
  • All participants must sign a waiver.
  • Riders must wear CPSC approved helmets and wear them at all times when riding a bicycle.
  • Riders must carry at least one spare tube, a flat kit, a pump, and a multi-tool. A quick link and a chain breaker are suggested. If you bring a CO2 pump, bring extra of cartridges.
  • RACERS may drop off spare wheels (above rule still applies) to be transported by wheel trucks following the race. Be sure your wheels are clearly labeled with your name, contact info, and gearing e.g.S(himano/SRAM) or C(ampy) – 9/10/11. HOWEVER as the race progresses and the wheel trucks fall back it may be a lot faster to change a flat yourself than to wait for the wheel truck to catch up to you. “Wheels in/Wheels out” applies
  • All participants will be issued a disposable timing chip
  • Ensure your bottle cages can handle rough roads. Consider carrying your bottles in your jersey pocket for the opening section of the race. Do not use seatpost-mounted “rocket launcher” bottle cages or you may injure a following rider.
  • Centerline rule will be strictly enforced. The course uses many narrow roads that are open to traffic.
  • Organizer reserves right to combine age-group and/or prizes for age-groups with fewer than 10 (ten) riders
  • Cancellation, postponement or re-routing of course due to dangerous conditions at the discretion of land owner, law enforcement, and the promoter.

Prizes:

  • Prizes three deep to every race category
  • Race categories with 10 racers will pay $40 to first;
  • Race categories with 30 racers will pay $80 to first and $40 to second;
  • Race categories with 50 racers will pay $120 to first, $80 to second and $40 to third.
  • The first place overall woman finisher will receive at least $40 regardless of number of category participants.
  • Additional prizes from Panaracer, Performance Bike, and Blue Mountain Revival Productions.
  • Award presentation 30 minutes after 10th place finish, winners must be present at awards ceremony to collect their prizes
  • There will be NO PRIZES AWARDED for the Gran Fondo
  • All registrants will receive a commemorative item TBA

Warnings:

  • Variable weather conditions leading up to or on the day of the event may result in extreme riding conditions.
  • The rider and bicycle should be in top condition before attempting this race.
  • The course includes 16 kilometers of unpaved roads that may be extremely rough, covered in deep potholes and/or muddy.
  • The course includes several very steep, technical descents where professional racers have crashed. One guy had his ear ripped off. If you fly off a switchback and no one sees you, the bears will find you before we know you are missing. Think about that.
  • All participants will have $10,000 in additional medical coverage provided via the insurance policy for the event.
  • The Koppenberg of the High Country (Big Flatts Church Rd) is unpaved with an incline greater than 20%. Compact cranksets and 26 tooth cogs are strongly recommended.
  • There are several long paved descents, and Railroad Grade Rd is a 10 mile stretch of very flat paved road. Cyclocross gearing (e.g. 46×12) will spin out.
  • 25c or larger diameter tires are highly recommended. Knobby cyclocross tires will be very slow.
  • Every year someone blows out a $100 tubular tire five minutes into the race and goes home. Don’t be that guy – use clinchers.
  • Carbon rims and frames may suffer serious damage from kicked up gravel.
  • Consider wearing MTB-style bike shoes as you may have to walk.
  • This race will be epic.
  • Don’t give up.
